Q: What are the Capture and Preview Pins? what about Smart-Tee? Capture devices have two "pins" that a program can hook into for use. One is called "Capture" and is the hook for a TV program to record. The other is called "Preview" which is a separate hook to see what the TV card is receiving. The Preview pin could be set to a different resolution than the Capture pin so that way say if your system could not handle recording at 640x480 you could still view the TV input at 640x480 while the recording took place at a lower-resolution.
This is not the best idea in practice as it leads to issues with recording and synchronizing. This is why "Use Capture pin for Preview" is now the default, in this way the Live TV image you see is directly from the capture pin and not from the preview pin. It must be checked for advanced features and recording types such as MPEG2 to work on software encoding cards. Smart-tee is a special option, because some capture cards can not capture and preview above 320x288(PAL) or 320x240(NTSC), the Smart Tee can tap into the video stream and preview using the actual video capture stream. However this is a cheat of sorts and MPEG2 and WMV recording support can't work with it set in the TV Plugin. Also note that the above definitions are for software cards, hardware MPEG2 encoding cards (ie: Hauppauge PVR-250/350, Yuan MPG600, etc.) are totally different and these settings do not apply.
